Unicorn hallmark

Sonja Quandt

The unicorn as a coat of arms was created under the rule of the Hohenstaufen kings and was given to the city of Schwäbisch Gmünd. It is one of the oldest coats of arms in Baden-Wuerttemberg and was first documented in 1277 as a seal print.
The guilds used the unicorn punch as a reference mark and flag. It served as an official test mark and quality sign for example to lable correct filled barrels or real materials, such as pure silver.

1860 Gebrüder Kühn was honored to be the only silver manufactory with the right to use the unicorn as a hallmark to document quality and tradition.
